ABOUT
ABOUT
AMY WAKEFIELD
I'm Amy Wakefield, a Strength and Performance Coach based in Cape Town, currently coaching at False Bay Fitness. I work with people who want to train with purpose - building real strength, improving performance, and staying consistent without burning out.
I didn't come from a conventional fitness background. At 21, I left hairdressing to pursue professional mountain biking - with no funding, no backing, just determination and a love for the sport. What followed was a colourful 12-year career that took me to UCI XCO, and XCM World Cups and World Championships, and six Absa Cape Epics. I coached mountain bike skills throughout my career and found great fulfilment in empowering people to do things they never believed possible.
When that chapter ended, I moved into scuba diving instruction, then personal training. Every step has been a natural evolution of the same thing: a love for teaching, and genuine satisfaction in watching people discover what they're capable of.

ATHLETIC BACKGROUND
WHERE THE COACHING
COMES FROM
Before coaching, Amy Wakefield spent 12 years competing as a professional mountain biker, representing South Africa at UCI World Cup and World Championship level. She was a regular on the podium at XCO and XCM SA Champs and was crowned SA Marathon Champ in 2022. Amy raced the Absa Cape Epic six times, 5 in the elite women’s category. At her peak in 2022 she was ranked 4th in the world in UCI cross-country marathon racing.
That career wasn't just about results, it was an education in how the body responds to sustained load, how to train through adversity, and how to stay consistent over years, not just weeks.
Alongside racing, Amy spent over a decade as an MTB skills coach and continues to work part-time as a PADI scuba diving instructor. She trains alongside her clients, not above them.
The Thing That Drives Me
I've always loved the moment someone achieves something they didn't think they could.
I spent over a decade as an MTB skills coach, worked as a scuba diving instructor, and now coach full-time as a personal trainer. The common thread has always been that breakthrough moment. My coaching is built on meeting people where they are at, patience, honest communication, and programming that respects both performance and recovery. I don't believe in training that either burns people out or doesn’t challenge them; the magic happens somewhere in the middle.
